Artist jeweller, silversmith and engraver.
Specialist engraver working to commission on one-off pieces, mainly in 18ct gold and silver. Work often incorporates precious gemstones.
Recent work has moved into larger ‘Spinning Bowls’ in silver where the engraving on the surface of the vessels can be animated by gently spinning the bowl on its stone base. Uses enamels and unusual gilding colours as part of the expression of the symbolism of the piece.
Alan was taught engraving by Fred Fryer and Stan Reece in the early 70s at the Sir John Cass School of Art & Design and has used engraving as a basis for much of his jewellery practice for over 30 years.
Senior lecturer and Director of the Short Course Programme at the Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design in the School of Jewellery and Silversmithing until 2009.
First Chair of the Hand Engravers Association of Great Britain (2007-2010) and now responsible for exhibitions.
